15 and FARE Restaurant Program

FARE is offering restaurants in Kansas City FREE training and resources to enhance their food allergy safety practices.

Program Overview

As part of the 15 and FARE initiative in the Kansas City region, FARE is offering restaurants of all sizes FREE training and resources to enhance their food allergy safety practices. Restaurants who meet the program requirements become a recognized 15 and FARE Restaurant Partner.

To receive recognition, a restaurant must meet the following criteria:

  • train 90% or more of their food service staff
  • conduct a monthly on-site audit for three consecutive months
  • create a written food allergy management policy (if they do not already have one)
  • demonstrate food allergen transparency on their menus

Training

All prospective locations can access the FARECheck Restaurant Training at FoodAllergyAcademy.org at no cost. The FARECheck training covers food allergy management for front- and back-of-house restaurant staff, as well as how to recognize and respond to an allergic reaction. Free initial registration is required to access the Food Allergy Academy.

Monthly On-site Audit

To qualify for recognition, locations must provide three consecutive months of the on-site restaurant audit using a FARECheck Restaurant Audit Tool

Documented Food Allergy Policy or Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)

This document may include such topics as ingredient management and storage; communication with guests; how to prevent cross-contact in the kitchen and during service; and cleaning protocols.

Menu Transparency

To fulfil this criteria, printed menus, menu boards, and/or website should indicate menu items that contain any of the Top 9 allergens. Additionally, in the SOP, there should be a process to review these menu tags to ensure accuracy, and to identify one food allergy champion per shift to answer ingredient questions in real time from customers.

Receiving Recognition

Once all the above criteria are complete, restaurants apply here for consideration as a 15 and FARE Restaurant Partner under the FARECheck Platinum program. This program is free to all restaurants in Kansas City, KS/MO. To indicate interest and receive the unique promo codes, email education@foodallergy.org.

The three audits, SOP, and proof of training and menu transparency must be uploaded with the application. The required documentation can be uploaded at the restaurant’s convenience but will only be reviewed once all requirements are uploaded.

After the recognition is awarded, restaurants receive the 15 and FARE Restaurant Partner logo for use and are added to the FARECheck Map. Restaurants can use the logo on social posts and/or websites to indicate recognition.

Recognition is valid for one year from the date of award. For continued recognition and logo use permission, restaurants will need to resubmit their entire application annually.
