Dear [Principal/Nurse/Teacher Name],
I’m writing as a [parent/caregiver/community member] to share a resource that I believe can support our school’s efforts to create a safer, more supportive, welcoming environment for students with food allergy.
FARE (Food Allergy Research & Education), funded by the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) and in partnership with American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), recently published the Food Allergy Management in Schools (FAMS): Expert Recommendations for K–12. This document provides comprehensive, evidence-based guidance for school districts and staff, covering:
- Staff training and legal responsibilities
- Preventing allergen exposure in classrooms, cafeterias, and during activities
- Emergency preparedness and epinephrine access
- Communication, collaboration, and student inclusion
With food allergies affecting an estimated 1 in 13 children, or 2 in every classroom, and reactions occurring frequently in schools—including among undiagnosed students—these recommendations offer a critical roadmap for protecting students and ensuring they can participate in all aspects of school life. The full report is at Foodallergy.org/FAMS.
FARE offers free training resources for school staff and administrators, school nutrition professionals, and volunteers, to make using FAMS easy and practical. Please consider reviewing these recommendations and incorporating them into our school’s policies.
Thank you for your commitment to student safety and well-being. I would be happy to discuss this further or help make connections with food allergy education resources.
Sincerely,
[Name]
