NEWPORT BEACH, CA (Nov. 9, 2017) – The 12th Annual Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) Teen Summit will welcome nearly 500 members of the food allergy community this weekend to Newport Beach, CA. This is the first time that this popular educational event is being held on the West Coast.

FARE’s Teen Summit – the nation’s largest annual gathering of its kind -- will welcome pre-teens, teens and young adults, as well as their parents, for a weekend of learning and bonding. FARE will kick off the event at the Newport Beach Marriott by bringing back last year’s successful Innovation Tank, a competition for young entrepreneurs making a difference in the lives of those affected by food allergy.

“For more than a decade, this event has built enduring friendships and has taught teens how to smartly manage their food allergies, giving them skills they will need for years to come,” said James R. Baker, Jr., MD, CEO and chief medical officer of FARE. “We look forward to welcoming back some familiar faces and meeting new families, and supporting them through their journey with food allergy.”

Research shows teens are more likely to engage in risk-taking behaviors when it comes to their food allergies. Unfortunately, this risk-taking behavior means teens are at the highest risk for fatal, food-induced anaphylactic reactions. The FARE Teen Summit helps educate teens about how to take the right steps to manage their food allergies, avoid risks and be prepared when they have a reaction.

This year’s Teen Summit features sessions on preparing for college, clinical trials, bully-proofing, anaphylaxis, managing anxiety related to food allergies and much more. Sessions are led by top experts in the field and youth leaders. Practical management tips, traveling with food allergies, social pressures and dating, tips for preparing allergy-friendly meals and more will all be covered.

FARE thanks OWYN, Only What You Need, Inc., as the Presenting Sponsor of Innovation Tank in 2017.
