FARE Commends Administration for Taking Critical Step Towards Food Allergy Treatment Affordability, Accessibility
New Executive Order Ensures Injectable Epinephrine Be Available at Discounted Prices for Those with Low Incomes
McLean, Va. (July 26, 2020)—FARE (Food Allergy Research & Education), the world’s leading food allergy advocacy organization and largest private funder of food allergy research, commends President Trump and the Administration for making epinephrine, a life-saving medication for those with life-threatening food allergies, more accessible and affordable to the food allergy community.
On Friday, July 24, President Trump issued an Executive Order on Access to Affordable Life-saving Medications. This Executive Order takes action to ensure injectable epinephrine is available at a discounted price to individuals with low incomes.
“There are 32 million Americans living with potentially life-threatening food allergies – a disease for which there remains no cure - and this Executive Order making injectable epinephrine more affordable and accessible is a truly life-saving action,” said Lisa Gable, chief executive officer of FARE. “So many American families struggle to afford this vital medication. Nobody should have to decide between putting food on the table or being able to save a loved one’s life. FARE and the entire food allergy community is grateful for the Administration’s action.”
Efforts to bring down the cost of injectable epinephrine have made an important difference for families with food allergies but despite increased competition in the market, the price for some injectable epinephrine remains more than $600 per kit, making it a challenging if not impossible purchase for many Americans to afford.
