FARE Board Member Dr. Milton Brown and his Team Receive $1.57m Grant for Breast Cancer Treatment

March 25, 2022 (McLean, VA) – Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) is proud to announce that Board member Dr. Milton Brown and his team of researchers at George Mason University’s Center for Drug Discovery for Rare Disorders (CDDRD) have just received a $1.57 million grant from the Department of Defense to fund the research and development of a breast cancer treatment that focuses on individuals with the BRAC1 mutation.

Over the next three years, Dr. Brown and the team at CDDRD will be researching and analyzing the BRAC1 protein, which is the protein that helps regulate normal breast cell function. When an individual has the mutated protein, the incidence of breast cancer as well as ovarian cancer is increased. The team will also be working on creating a therapeutic drug to replace the BRAC1 in women who are deficient. Instead of undergoing and recovering from major surgery, these women could have an alternative treatment regimen and simply take a pill. This research will prove to be life changing for breast and ovarian cancer and pre-cancerous patients.

Dr. Milton Brown has been a passionate supporter of FARE over the years, serving most recently as an active board member. Currently, he serves as Professor of Practice and Director for the Center for Drug Discovery for Rare and Underserved Diseases at George Mason University and as Fellow at the National Academy of Inventors (FNAI). Dr. Brown is a physician-scientist who has expertise in the design, synthesis and evaluation of new drugs and is one of only a handful of physician-scientists in the U.S. to hold both a PhD in synthetic chemistry and an MD. Dr. Brown is a recipient of the 2015 Percy Julian Award by the National Organization of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers for significant contributions in pure and/or applied research in science

Please join FARE in congratulating our own Dr. Milton Brown on this great achievement.
