Food Allergy Community Will Discuss the Future of Food Allergy Public Health Crisis

McLEAN, Va. (October 28, 2019) – FARE (Food Allergy Research & Education), the world’s largest private funder of food allergy research, will bring together 1,000 advocates and members of the food allergy community members for the Contains: Courage® FARE Summit 2019. The summit will begin on Friday, Nov. 1 and run through Sunday, Nov. 3, 2019 at the Gaylord Hotel in National Harbor, Md., just outside our nation’s capital.

FARE will welcome more than 70 speakers from across the country, including top food allergy medical experts, business leaders, inspiring teens living with food allergies and other allies. The three-day agenda includes more than 60 sessions covering topics important to the food allergy community—from innovations in new food allergy therapies to regulatory and legislative action to navigating life with a life-threatening food allergy as a child and young adult.

“Food allergies in the U.S. have escalated to epidemic proportions and now affect more than 32 million Americans, including roughly two children in every classroom,” said FARE CEO, Lisa Gable. “This summit provides members of our community with the opportunity to come together, learn, connect and inspire. Together, we have the ability to drive real change, encourage the development of innovative therapies and find a cure.”

During the Summit, six community members and advocates will be presented with a FARE Vision Award. In addition, FARE is recognizing the memory of Elijah-Alavi Silvera by renaming our advocacy impact award in his honor. Vision Awards recognize exemplary work that has the potential to make an impact on the lives of millions of Americans living with food allergies. Among this year’s recipients is Rep. Doris Matsui (D-HI), recognized for championing the FASTER Act in the U.S. House of Representatives, which would accelerate urgently needed research and regulatory reforms, as well as update labeling laws to require the inclusion of sesame as a top allergen.

Other vision award recipients are:

  • FARE 2019 Elijah-Alavi Silvera Advocacy Impact Award: Ira Riklis
  • FARE 2019 Outstanding Community Education Award: Mike Lade
  • FARE 2019 Outstanding Business Award for Food Allergy Activism: Pixie Lizzie
  • FARE 2019 Outstanding Health Professional Award: David Anmuth, MD, FAAAAI, FACAAI
  • FARE 2019 Outstanding Teen Achievement Award: Tessa Grosso
  • FARE 2019 Outstanding Leadership in Public Policy Award: Honorable Rep. Doris Matsui
