A Spotlight on Braxton Kimura, FARE Food Allergy Champion

A new documentary, The Last Bite, follows teenager Braxton Kimura’s daily reality of living with severe food allergy, where every meal could be his last.

Braxton Kimura was diagnosed with life-threatening peanut allergy at 14 months old, and his family soon realized he was allergic to tree nuts and shellfish as well.

Now a high-school student, Kimura (shown above with Sung Poblete, PhD, RN, CEO of FARE) has taken an empowered path toward living with food allergy. He is an active member of FARE’s Teen Advisory Group (TAG), he started Pinewood High School's Food Allergy Club, and he founded a new national initiative, Beyond the Shell. One of Beyond the Shell’s first activities was to host a Food Allergy Awareness and Fundraising Walk in May 2025 at Mitchell Park in Palo Alto, California.

“By spreading awareness, we help create more understanding, safer environments, and better support communities,” Kimura said in an interview with FARE.

This summer, Kimura and Beyond the Shell is releasing The Last Bite, a documentary that captures that it is like for a teenager to live with the worry that every meal could be his last. The short film’s tagline is: “Survival. Strength. Vigilance.” One of the most gripping images, used in the movie’s poster, shows Kimura experiencing a skin prick test to measure the presence of IgE antibodies, a type of allergic response, for suspected food allergens.

“My goal is to help people better understand the daily challenges and realities that often go unseen,” Kimura said. Food allergy is a top-tier health concern that affects more than 33 million people living in the U.S., yet it remains under-recognized and misunderstood. “If even one person becomes more aware, more empathetic, or better prepared to help in an emergency, then it’s all worth it.”
