Senior Director, Program Management (Research and Innovation)

McLean, VA (Remote location considered)

The Senior Director of Program Management (Research and Innovation) will be responsible for leading and overseeing multiple strategic programs that are outlined in FARE’s 5-year strategic plan. This person will be an integral team member and will be expected to play multiple different roles to help support execution of the strategic plan. The Senior Director will also support in the on-going development, tracking and implementation of the broader FARE research strategy which will be updated on an annual to semi-annual basis. 

This role will report directly to the Chief of Strategy and Innovation at FARE and will work closely with FARE’s Chief Medical Advisor for Operations and other medical advisors to FARE.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work with FARE senior leadership on the development of a research and innovation strategy for the foundation. Create and refine strategies that will increase the value of FARE’s offering to the food allergy community
  • Take ownership of specific strategic initiatives and related programs including hands-on implementation. Must be able clearly define project scope, objectives, specifications, and critical path actions to achieve FARE goals
  • Lead successful execution of select initiatives, track progress and report status to the board, senior leaderhip and external partners periodically
  • Help with financial modeling and budgeting processes to inform strategic planning, initiative workplans and partnering / investment opportunities
  • Identify and evaluate attractive new opportunities for research to inform strategic planning and to assess the attractiveness of specific opportunities for FARE to fund (e.g., via grants, equity or other mechanisms) 
  • Help manage external review process for FARE funded research and innovation including overseeing review with indepdent advisors and various FARE organized committees (e.g., Research Advisory Board)
  • Participate and support in related external partnering and business development activities with academic institutions, other non-profits, government and industry players. Lead external relationships as appropriate (e.g., if directly tied to initiatives managed)
  • Be a student of the industry keeping abreast of changes in food allergy research, clinical trial activity, and new advances in care. Develop and maintain an in-depth understanding of key segments of the market (e.g., by technology category) and the landscape of potential industry and non-industry players
  • Provide in-house industry and technical expertise related to food allergy research and innovation 
  • Work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to align incentives and ensure success of specific research initiatives
  • Be an ambassador of FARE and attend external meetings and confernces as appropriate 
  • Integrate workstreams cross-functionally to ensure alignment and efficiency across all FARE activities

  • Ability to successfully engage internal and external stakeholders (at various levels and across functions) on new ideas; adept at moving senior management to action. Must have superior interpersonal skills
  • Ability to facilitate large group discussions with top-level executives and key opinion leaders. Proven ability to drive towards consensus 
  • The ability to respond and work with a wide range of personality types internal and external to the organization
  • Highly organized and process oriented 
  • Must possess strong English communication and writing skills and be able to work independently and as part of a team

Education and Experience

  • PhD or MD required with a good understanding of immunology, ideally with relevant experience in atopic / allergic disease
  • 3+ years of relevant biopharma industryand/or related non-profit research experience , demonstrating a broad and proven understanding of early drug development and research collaboration
  • Experience in complex project management. Prior experience in management consulting or internal corporate strategy / business development and development is preferred but not required
  • Must have prior experience and in-depth knowledge of US healthcare landscape
  • Proven ability to work successfully in a cross-functional matrixed environment
  • Experience conducting technology, product and company asssessments for evaluation and investment
  • Preferable, but not required, to have an interest in food allergy
