Senior National Director of Advocacy for Federal Affairs

The Sr. National Director of Advocacy for Federal Affairs is responsible for planning and implementing FARE’s federal legislative and governmental affairs strategy. Specifically, the Sr. National Director of Advocacy for Federal Affairs will lead the organization’s efforts to improve the health and well-being of all those affected by food allergies by advocating for increased funding for food allergy research at the federal level (NIH and DOD). Responsible for advocating for more effective federal laws and policies aimed at increasing safety and inclusion of those with food allergies, and improved relations with key federal and governmental oversight agencies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead the process to develop and maintain a formal posture for FARE federal public policy plan on issues, including, but not limited to, medical research funding, health care access issues, food allergy awareness resolutions, and general legislation impacting health care and biopharmaceutical industry.
  • Establish and foster Congressional food allergy Caucus in the House. Identify plan to launch food allergy Caucus in U.S. Senate and individual states.
  • Continue to strengthen FARE presence on Capitol Hill.
  • Strengthen working relationships with key thought leaders and policymakers, including but not limited to those in Congress, the Administration, trade associations, think tanks and relative coalitions.
  • Work with legislative consultant on federal issues.
  • Identify ways to get FARE’s organizational messages and policy agenda recognized and featured in appropriate public affairs forums.
  • Develop and coordinate advocacy recruitment, training, and communication and engagement projects such as seminars, conferences and lobbying exercises.
  • Contribute legislative information to website and other communication vehicles, such as national newsletter, and annual report.
  • Manage lobbyists, and oversee legislative activities, with special grassroots, including Public Policy Alliance.
  • Draft testimony, position papers, and correspondence and work with media on policy-related stories, as required.
  • Co-ordinate with other FARE advocacy staff on state and local issues.
  • Perform general administrative tasks related to the position.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Previous experience in legislative affairs, preferably in health policy in Congress, the Executive Branch or as a lobbyist with a health care organization.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience, 7 years preferred
  • General understanding of food allergies medical and social implications
  • Knowledge of federal health policy and insurance laws, and food and drug regulations.
  • Proven ability to interact productively with senior management and members of Congress and Administration.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communications and negotiation skills.
  • Some travel may be required.
