Food Allergy Awareness Week
The 2010 Food Allergy Awareness Week (FAAW), the theme of which was “Respect Every Bite,” was a great success. Thirty-seven states, 11 more than last year, officially recognized FAAW with proclamations.
Numerous print and television stories covered FAAW events in communities across the country. FAAN’s public service announcement featuring country music star and Walk for Food Allergy National Honorary Chairman Trace Adkins aired more than 750 times in one month alone, bringing nearly 35 million impressions to this public service campaign.
FAAN CEO Julia Bradsher authored a guest blog for the International Food Information Council Foundation, and she traveled to Houston for an educational event that reached 25,000 students. FAAN also hosted a Twitter party during FAAW to exchange information and ideas about food allergies.
Sen. Christopher Dodd, D-Conn., hosted a public forum on food allergies in his home state, and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases issued a news release in support of FAAW.
But it’s your individual efforts that always make FAAW so successful. We heard about a junior at a New Jersey high school who spearheaded an allergy-friendly bake sale and fundraiser in honor of FAAW, a member who posted food allergy facts as her Facebook status updates throughout the week, schools that promoted FAAN’s Be a PAL: Protect A Life™ From Food Allergies peer education program, and 5K runs dedicated to food allergy awareness in some parts of the country.
Thanks to you, more people learned something new about food allergies. These efforts go a long way toward educating the nation about food allergies. We can’t wait to see how you will raise awareness next year! Mark your calendar for the 2011 Food Allergy Awareness Week, May 8-14, 2011.
