Join school nurses and allied health professionals in the Dallas-Fort Worth area Monday evening, Nov. 12, 2007, from 5:00– 8:30 at the Gaylord Texan Resort & Convention Center in Grapevine, Texas, to learn food allergy and anaphylaxis basics, model programs for managing food allergies in schools, and practical tips from school nurses.
The workshop, which includes dinner, will feature expert speakers on food allergy and its management in school settings. Each attendee will receive a free School Food Allergy Program. This comprehensive multimedia program, developed by FAAN in collaboration with the National Association of School Nurses (NASN), is in use at thousands of schools across the country.
The School Food Allergy Program includes:
- More than 100 pages of written material, including forms and model programs;
- A video/DVD entitled Keeping Our Children Safe;
- EpiPen® and Twinject® epinephrine auto-injector trainers;
- EpiPen® and Twinject® instructional DVDs;
- A food allergy awareness poster;
- “Be a PAL: Protect A Life™ from Food Allergies” peer-education program materials;
- A Food Allergy Action Plan form, which outlines what to do in case of an allergic reaction.
Following the workshop, school nurses will be able to:
- Describe the basics of food allergy, including common allergens, typical symptoms of allergic reactions, and how to treat an allergic reaction;
- Develop and institute individualized management plans for students with food allergies;
- Identify and implement risk reduction strategies to enable a student with food allergies to participate fully and equally in all normal facets of the school day.
