Ingredients

1/2 cup milk-free margarine, softened
1 cup sugar
2 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
2 T. water
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
1 1/2 T. water, 1 1/2 T oil, 1 tsp. baking powder; mixed together
2 cups flour
3 T. unsweetened cocoa powder mixed with 1 T. oil

Directions

In large mixing bowl, beat together margarine and sugar. Add baking powder and salt; beat well. Stir in water; vanilla extract; and water, oil, and baking powder mixture. Add flour. Stir well. Divide dough in half. Into one half, stir cocoa and oil mixture. You will have one chocolate and one vanilla dough batter. Divide each portion in half to make four portions.

Using lightly floured wax paper, roll each portion into a 9x5-inch rectangle, about 1/4-inch thick. Carefully place a rolled-out plain dough rectangle on top of a chocolate rectangle; pat firmly. Starting at short end of rectangle, roll dough, using wax paper to help hold dough together. Repeat with remaining dough. Wrap in plastic and chill 1 hour.

Preheat oven to 350º. Grease cookie sheet; set aside. Cut dough into 1/4-inch slices. Place 1 inch apart on cookie sheet. Bake 9 minutes or until bottoms are lightly browned. Cool on wire rack.

Fleischmann's Unsalted Stick Margarine is Dairy Free! I can find it at my local normal grocery store and it's much less expensive :-)

Promise is dairy free and the "spread " from Wegmans is as well. Giant' just added whey to theirs that used to be dairy free,

We just made them; and we made them gluten free. Although a little time consuming, they are such a big hit. My husband, who never gets excited about food, loves them as do the kids. :)

A little dissapointed. Time consuming and futsy to make - they crumbled when I got to slicing them for baking.
