FAAN Publishes Updated School Food Allergy Program
Revised Guide Now Includes Safe@School® Training Component
FAIRFAX, Va. (Nov. 11, 2010) – FAAN (The Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network) is pleased to announce the release of its newly revised and updated School Food Allergy Program, a comprehensive guide designed to help schools implement food allergy management policies to keep students with food allergies safe.
The program, which has been updated to reflect current food allergy data and information and has been reviewed by members of FAAN’s respected Medical Advisory Board, is now enhanced by the inclusion of the Safe@School® component, which provides educators with a slide presentation and talking points to train others about food allergies.
“I am thrilled to have the Safe@School® program under the FAAN umbrella,” said Maria Acebal, FAAN’s Vice President of Research and General Counsel, who brought the program to FAAN. “As the leader in food allergy education and awareness, FAAN has always strived to make things easier and safer for kids, parents, and teachers.”
The School Food Allergy Program is endorsed and/or supported by the Anaphylaxis Committee of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology and the National Association of School Nurses (NASN).
“This is a resource that addresses both clinical and practical issues that school nurses deal with on a daily basis,” said Sally Schoessler, director of nursing education for NASN. “The School Food Allergy Program addresses the important roles of all members of the school community to facilitate partnerships and, when appropriate, for a vital emergency response.”
Schools at every level can benefit from this essential tool, which includes chapters with information specifically geared toward principals, teachers, school nurses, food service staff, and parents. The guide also presents food allergy basics and includes FAAN’s booklet, Students With Food Allergies: The Laws; FAAN’s peer education program, Be a PAL: Protect A Life™ From Food Allergies; and the aforementioned Safe@School® program.
“We are very proud of this publication, which can positively impact school districts across the country,” said FAAN CEO Julia Bradsher. “The School Food Allergy Program equips educators with the tools they need to protect students with food allergies by providing them with science-based facts and directives for what actions to take when a food allergy reaction occurs. Most importantly, all of the information has been vetted by some of the top allergy experts in the U.S.”
Pricing for the program is as follows:
- School Food Allergy Program, $30
- Comprehensive Guide Only, $20
- Safe@School® Only, $20
