Only eight foods cause 90% of food-allergic reactions. These foods are milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, wheat, and soy. However, an individual can be allergic to any food.
The Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act (FALCPA) requires food manufacturers to disclose in plain language whether products contain any of the top eight food allergens, listed above, when present in any amount, even in colors, flavors, or spice blends.
Therefore, if you are allergic to a food or ingredient that is exempt from FALCPA, be aware that the ingredient you are avoiding may be hidden under terms such as colors, flavors, or spices on food labels.
If you have a question about ingredients in a food product, you must contact the manufacturer for more information.
While sesame is not yet considered by FDA to be one of the foods that most commonly cause allergic reactions, sesame allergy can occur and is sometimes severe. If you have been diagnosed with a sesame allergy, read all labels carefully, and contact manufacturers with any questions you have about food products.
Regardless of which food you are allergic to, work closely with a board-certified allergist and, if need be, a registered dietitian to ensure your diet is balanced.
