Millions of Americans will be traveling this summer for family vacations. Keep in mind the following tips if a member of your family is managing a food allergy:
- Plan road trips and flight times around meal times if possible.
- Pack enough food to reach your destination.
- Don’t let your guard down while dining out – being tired from a long day at the beach or an amusement park may tempt you to take shortcuts.
- If staying at a hotel, do a visual inspection upon checking in – we’ve heard of at least one member who found loose peanuts on the floor.
- Check to make sure that your prescription medication is current and not expired.
- Pack additional epinephrine auto-injectors, if prescribed.
- Research urgent medical care facilities in your destination to learn more about the distance from where you are staying, and whether your insurance will cover out-of-network medical care.
- If flying, check with the airlines to see what snacks are being served and to see if any accommodations can be made based on specific food allergies (e.g. peanut, tree nuts).
