Peer Education

When it comes to managing food allergies in the classroom, be sure to include peer education as part of your plan. You can engage students by following these simple steps:

  • Request to spend time in the classroom to discuss food allergies with students. Thirty minutes should be plenty.
  • Show FAAN’s Alexander the Elephant Who Couldn’t Eat Peanuts Goes to School DVD, give students pictures to color, or do one of the age-appropriate activities suggested in the accompanying Discussion Guide. For older students, FAAN’s Friends Helping Friends: Make It Your Goal! Video and Discussion Guide would be appropriate.
  • Ask your child if he/she wants to participate by showing off medical identification jewelry or by asking their classmates’ help to stay safe.
  • Hand out free resources, such as FAAN’s Be a PAL: Protect A Life™ From Food Allergies materials. Some parents go an extra step and purchase pencils, stickers, coloring books, or other small trinkets to leave behind with the students.
  • Encourage students to share with their parents and with others what they have learned.
