Just because a product was safe the last time you purchased it doesn’t mean the ingredients have stayed the same! It is very important to read all labels all of the time. The following food manufacturers have recently worked with FAAN to provide you with information about changes in their product.

January 2012

General Mills

General Mills recently introduced a peanut butter variety of Cheerios cereal. A representative from the company supplied FAAN with this statement:

“We can say with complete confidence that MultiGrain Peanut Butter Cheerios will not cross-contaminate other Cheerios varieties. Currently, Honey Nut Cheerios, Banana Nut Cheerios, and Oat Cluster Cheerios Crunch contain ALMOND. Only Multi Grain Cheerios Peanut Butter contains PEANUTS. All other varieties, including original Cheerios, Multi Grain Cheerios, Apple Cinnamon Cheerios, Chocolate Cheerios, Cinnamon Burst Cheerios, Frosted Cheerios, Fruity Cheerios, and Yogurt Burst Cheerios, do not contain nuts. As always, we highly recommend that consumers consult the allergen listing and the ingredient label on any product they may consume. And for more product information, please visit www.cheerios.com/products”.

November 2011

Nestlé USA would you to know that it is changing the way allergens are labeled on a variety of products.

A “Contains …” statement will be added after the ingredient list, which will continue to list any food allergens directly added to the product. This change will take effect on confectionery products, beverages, ice cream and frozen desserts, baking products, and imported and specialty products. Nestlé’s frozen meals and pizzas already use this labeling.

Also, precautionary statements will now be consolidated to a simple “May contain …” statement.

These changes do not mean there has been a change in the allergens present in our products. Products sold by Nestlé Nutrition, Nestlé Waters, and Nestlé Healthcare are not included in this notice.

Nestlé Prepared Foods would like you to know that LEAN CUISINE® Culinary Collection Glazed Chicken now includes cashews in the revised recipe. The new packaging clearly highlights the cashews  in the front photograph in two ways: cashews are mixed with the green beans and rice, which accompany the chicken and there is a visual cue of a small dish of cashews in the photo background. The product description, which appears both on the front and side of the package, includes this language: “Roasted white meat chicken in a savory lemon tarragon sauce with rice, green beans & cashews.” The new recipe will begin to appear in supermarket freezer sections in late November 2011.
