Five Steps Forward for Food Allergy

In 2008, FAAN celebrated Food Allergy Awareness Week on Capitol Hill. At an educational briefing on May 13, FAAN unveiled a new advocacy initiative, “Five Steps Forward for Food Allergy,” aimed at improving the lives of Americans with food allergies. The initiative calls for:

  1. passage of legislation promoting guidelines to assure the safety of children in school

  2. the creation of a national food allergy information center at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

  3. the development of guidelines for the diagnosis and management of food allergies

  4. expanded funding for research on food allergy and anaphylaxis

  5. regulation to improve precautionary allergen statements on food labels

At the briefing, FAAN was joined by Jackie Clegg Dodd, wife of Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.), and Rhonda Adkins, wife of Trace Adkins, as well as Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), Rep. Jim Walsh (R-N.Y.), FAAN Junior Ambassador Kyle Ericson, and FAAN’s Medical Director Dr. Hugh Sampson.
