Background: Founded in 1991, FAAN (the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network) is the world’s largest nonprofit organization providing information about food allergy to the media, schools, health professionals, pharmaceutical companies, the food industry, and government officials, as well as the food-allergic community. FAAN’s membership now stands at close to 22,000 worldwide. FAAN serves as the communication link between the patient and others. FAAN is based in Fairfax, Va.

Mission: To raise public awareness, to provide advocacy and education, and to advance research on behalf of all those affected by food allergy and anaphylaxis.

Membership: FAAN has members in the United States, Canada, and 58 other countries. Members include people who have food allergy, parents of children with food allergy, school and government officials, and health care and food industry professionals.

FAAN Medical Advisory Board: Educational materials published by FAAN are reviewed for medical accuracy by FAAN’s 13-member Medical Advisory Board, composed of the leaders in food allergy science and medicine.

Annual Programs: Food Allergy Awareness Week, Food Allergy Conferences, Mariel C. Furlong Awards for Making a Difference, Food Allergy News for Kids Poster Contest, Teen Summit, Trick-or-Treat for Food Allergy, Walk for Food Allergy, Kids’ Congress on Capitol Hill.

International Partnership: The Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Alliance was established in 1999 by FAAN to facilitate information sharing among nonprofit organizations working in the field of food allergy around the world. In addition to FAAN, the Alliance includes representatives from Australia, Canada, China (Hong Kong), Germany, Israel, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.
