- Between 1997 and 2002, peanut allergy in children doubled in this country.
- The estimated number of Americans with food allergy has increased to approximately 12 million from 6 million in a few short years.
- In the United States, food allergy is the leading cause of anaphylaxis outside the hospital setting, resulting in an estimated 50,000 emergency room visits each year.
- 150 people die from their food allergy reactions each year in this country.
- Symptoms can begin within seconds of ingestion of the wrong food; death can occur within minutes.
- Daily life is stressful for those with food allergy. There is no cure; avoidance of the food allergen is the only way to prevent a reaction.
