2011 Heart of FAAN Child Ambassadors

Meet the 2011 Heart of FAAN Child Ambassadors:

Austin Nuesch, age 10, has lived with food allergies since he was an infant. In addition to serious allergies to milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, sesame, shellfish, Austin is allergic to many other foods.

Having grown up with so many food allergies, Austin is well-informed and ready to educate others about food allergies and anaphylaxis as our 2011 Heart of FAAN Ambassador.

Austin, who is home-schooled, enjoys swimming, snow-tubing, boating, traveling with his family in their recreational vehicle, and corresponding with his pen pal.

“I can help kids with food allergies get through all of this: checking food labels, calling manufacturers about shared equipment, avoidance, needles, medication, sickness, and fear,” Austin said. “I know of a lot of really good recipes, too!”

Austin wants to remind others that it’s important to be careful around kids with food allergies, and not to leave them out.

Our other Heart of FAAN Ambassador is Erica Friedman, age 10. She is allergic to peanuts, beef, and lamb. Erica loves to sing, read, play soccer, and dance (ballet). She also cooks a lot of her own safe treats for school and parties. In the past, Erica, has participated in FAAN’s Walk for Food Allergy events and held a bake sale and lemonade stand to raise funds for a cure for food allergy.

“I feel like I would be a good role model for younger kids to follow,” Erica said. “I am always thinking on the bright side and I am very good at showing self-control.”

Congratulation to Austin and Erica! Throughout the year they will represent FAAN by talking about their experiences and participating in FAAN events.
