Food Allergies Don't Stop Me

Most teenagers do the same types of activities, such as hanging out with friends at places like the movies or the mall. So, why shouldn’t you? Just because you have food allergies doesn’t mean that you can’t have fun and be a normal teen. My food allergies don’t stop me from being like other adolescents. Being prepared enables me to live a regular, teenage life.

Going to the movies is one of the most ordinary things for teens to do. As everybody knows, it is typical to get snacks and drinks at the movie theater. Maybe they don’t sell anything there that you are allowed to eat. Most likely, you feel weird and even awkward not eating anything while your friends are eating popcorn and candy; I do too. So, I bring candy and snacks from my house that I know are okay for me to eat. Usually, I bring popcorn without butter that I make myself at home, or safe candies. Being prepared not only allows you to be anxiety-free, but you also end up spending less money!

My friends and I love to go to the mall on the weekends. We go shopping for a few hours, and then, inevitably, it’s time for lunch. So, we head over to the food court. Because I personally would rather play it safe and not buy food from the food court, I pack my own lunch and bring it with me to the mall. Some people with food allergies may feel comfortable enough to eat at a place like a food court; it’s a personal choice. When I bring my own meal, many times my friends look at my food and compare it to theirs. In most cases, they end up being jealous that that I have a home cooked meal, while they’re eating unappetizing junk food. Sometimes, I’ll bring a sandwich with soy butter and jelly, pretzels, and a package of allergy-friendly cookies. By carrying my own lunch with me, I am prepared, and I’m able to have a fun time at the mall with my friends whenever I want to.

So, you should never feel like your food allergies are defining you. Don’t think that just because you have food allergies, you can’t do everyday teenage activities. You are a normal teenager; don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Remember to always be prepared by keeping food with you, so you don’t feel unsafe or left out of anything. Go to the movies and the mall and have fun!
