LEADING PRINCETON ALLERGIST TO RUN MARATHON IN BIG APPLE FOR FOOD ALLERGY CHARITY
Dr. Julie Caucino to Honor National Leading Nonprofit,
The Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network

(Fairfax, Va., November 1, 2006) - Former Chief of Allergy and Immunology at the University Medical Center at Princeton, Dr. Julie Caucino is gearing up to run the NY marathon on Sunday, November 5 to raise funds to support The Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network (FAAN). The renowned medical expert and FAAN member will run the 26.2 miles in order to raise $5,000 to fund food allergy research and education on behalf of her patients.

Since April, Dr. Caucino has been balancing the demands of her medical practice along with her tough training regime. "This is my first full marathon so naturally the training is pretty intensive," said Dr. Caucino. "However, it is well worth the effort to represent the hundreds of patients with food allergies that I care for on a daily basis. I am proud to raise awareness of such a critical public health concern and raise money to one day find a cure."

Dr. Caucino will be wearing a long sleeved teal shirt to represent FAAN’s colors. The shirt will also have the FAANSi logo on the front with a tagline of “Got Epi?” on the back to represent epinephrine, a life-saving medication for individuals with anaphylaxis, an allergic reaction that can quickly cause death.

Currently, food allergy impacts more than 12 million Americans in our country. Food allergies are on the rise with 3 million youth under the age of 18 affected by food allergies in our country today. Food allergy reactions result in over 30,000 emergency room visits each year and as many as 200 deaths annually. There is no cure for these potentially life-threatening allergies which is why education is essential for keeping children with food allergies safe.

Dr. Caucino, the past President of the New Jersey Allergy Society is also a Clinical Instructor at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and actively involved in clinical research at Princeton Allergy and Asthma in Skillman. Her areas of expertise include comprehensive care in allergy, asthma, sinusitis, and anaphylaxis.

“I am honored by Dr. Caucino’s decision to support FAAN’s research efforts on behalf of patients,” said Anne Muñoz -Furlong, Founder and CEO of FAAN . “She helps patients during the week and now she is giving of herself physically, emotionally, and financially to help us find a cure for food allergy. Her commitment to patients with food allergies makes her a winner to FAAN and the millions of people we serve.”
