FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: BOWIE BAYSOX ANNOUNCE (Fairfax, Va., June 28, 2006) — The Bowie Baysox, Class “AA” affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, in partnership with The Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network (FAAN), today announced that Section 124 will be made exclusively available for those individuals with food allergies and their families during the Monday, July 10 game vs. The Harrisburg Senators (7 p.m. et). “The Bowie Baysox are leading an initiative that all baseball teams should consider. For individuals with a peanut allergy, and their families and friends, the simplest summer activity, like going to a baseball game, could become a life-threatening situation,” said Anne Muñoz-Furlong, Founder and CEO of FAAN, the nation's largest nonprofit, patient advocacy organization increasing awareness, education, and research funding for those individuals with food allergies and anaphylaxis. The Baysox will be taking extra precautions during the game such as stationing extra ushers at Section 124 in order to prevent food that may cause a reaction, such as peanuts, from entering the Section; making emergency medical personnel (EMTs) available during the game in the event of an allergic emergency; and thoroughly wiping down the seats and sweeping the grounds of the Section. An estimated 12 million Americans have an allergy to common foods such as peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, wheat, and soy, making it a significant public health and food safety issue. According to the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, more than one and a half million Americans suffer from a peanut allergy. Even the smallest particle of peanut can trigger a reaction. Some reactions include hives or difficulty breathing or even anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction that can cause death). Food allergy reactions result in over 30,000 emergency room visits each year and more than 150 deaths annually. To prevent a reaction, individuals with food allergies must rely on strict avoidance of the food to which they are allergic. “A high number of our fans are families and we wanted to be able to accommodate those families that have a member with food allergies,” said Ryan Roberts, communications manager for The Bowie Baysox. “We hope to make this a special event by having teen members of FAAN throw out the ceremonial first pitch and providing giveaways to game attendees in order to educate the public on food allergies.” Michelle Risigner, a twenty-one-year-old American University student with an allergy to tree nuts and peanuts, has been selected by FAAN to throw out the first pitch. “We commend the Baysox for taking the initiative to create this section and increasing awareness of the seriousness of food allergies,” continued Muñoz-Furlong. “We are pleased to partner with them to help create awareness of peanut and other food allergies. Baseball is the national pastime, and this is a great event for kids who can’t normally attend a game because they are at risk of an allergic reaction.” Section 124 is located directly behind third base. Tickets will be $11 and may be purchased in advance by contacting Matt McLaughlin, Group Events Manager, at 301-464-4890 or at mmclaughlin@baysox.com. Please purchase in advance as seating is limited. Prince George’s Stadium is located in Bowie, MD.
