Host a Viewing Party for the Discovery Channel Documentary!
In addition to tuning in yourself, you can help raise awareness and critical funds for food allergies by hosting a viewing party in your community! Hosting a viewing party is an opportunity to rally your network and start important conversations about food allergies.
The documentary will air Saturday, Sept. 7 and Saturday, Sept. 21 at 8 a.m. ET/PT. Not an early bird? Not to worry! The show will be available to stream from Discovery’s website at www.discoverychannelpatienteducation.com, and can be downloaded from iTunes so you can choose when works best for you to host a party for your family and friends. Be advised that this medical documentary depicts the life-threatening nature of food allergies - parents may want to screen the program before showing to young children.
We are pleased to announce that So Delicious Dairy Free has pledged up to $5,000 in matching funds for every dollar raised through the viewing parties, so your donation will have twice the impact!
Here are a few tips on how to host a successful viewing party:
1. Plan your event
The viewing party can be a great opportunity for you to raise awareness, spark discussion and learn something new! It can also be a chance for you to raise funds for Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) so that we can continue to bring food allergies into the spotlight as a serious and growing public health issue. Ask your guests to show their support for the food allergy community with a contribution to FARE (for example, a suggested contribution of $15 per person to represent the 15 million Americans with food allergies).
For every dollar raised through the viewing parties, our sponsor So Delicious Dairy Free will match the contribution!
2. Send out invitations
Set up a Facebook event or use an online invitation service such as Eventbrite or Evite to let your friends and family know about your event. Handmade invitations are always an option, too, and can be a fun activity to get your kids involved in the party planning!
3. Make the party food-allergy-friendly
In your invitation, ask your guests to let you know if they have food allergies or any special dietary or health concerns you should be aware of. Depending on your preference, you can offer snacks or have guests bring their own snacks and beverages that are safe for their family.
4. Start a dialogue about food allergies
When your guests have finished watching the documentary, facilitate a discussion about food allergies. Go around the room and have everyone report one new thing they learned or one observation/comment. You can also invite the individuals in the room who have food allergies to share their personal experience with managing the disease. What a great way to bring everyone together for a common cause!
5. Send in your donation and have your contribution matched by So Delicious Dairy Free!
You can send in your donation by sending a check to FARE headquarters, indicating on the check or in a letter that the funds were raised through a viewing party. Or, you can set up your computer at the viewing party and have your guests conveniently donate online with a credit card. You should use the "Honorary Giving" form and check "I would like to make this gift in honor of." Then enter "Discovery Documentary" in the "First Name" field.
