Food Allergy Awareness Week
Help spread the word about Living and Learning With Food Allergies during the 11th Annual Food Allergy Awareness Week (FAAW), May 11-17, 2008. This week is devoted to food allergies. There are lots of ways to get involved—visit a local ambulance provider to learn about epinephrine, hang posters, have a fundraiser, talk to legislators, everything helps. The following resources will help you get involved.
- Looking for daily activities? This calendar (.pdf ~31kb) provides suggested activities for individuals, schools, families, and more.
- Would you like to help raise money for food allergy awareness? Learn about Food Allergy PAL™ Day, along with steps to success (.pdf ~289kb)in planning this fundraiser.
- Does your state recognize FAAW? E-mail advocacy@foodallergy.org to see if your state has been contacted to issue a proclamation. If not, download a sample letter (.pdf ~11kb) and proclamation (.pdf ~39kb), and send your governor a request to declare Food Allergy Awareness Week.
The following states have formally recognized FAAW:
Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisianna, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Utah, and Virginia.

- Do you have school-age children or are you looking to get others involved? The following are ways to help schools and organizations get involved.
- Read an Alexander, the Elephant Who Couldn’t Eat Peanuts book or watch an Alexander DVD with a friend. Check out the whole series (.pdf ~185kb) of Alexander books and DVDs!
- Invite a few people over to watch the Friends Helping Friends DVD.
- Give out PAL™ Hero Awards (.pdf ~255kb). Be sure to make one for the school or organization, in addition to the individual kids or participants.
- Hang posters at your local grocery store, library, and other places around town.
- Complete the Alexander and friends coloring (.pdf ~202kb) and activity (.pdf ~160kb) pages.
